Macarthur got off the bus in Finglas, the working-class North Dublin suburb where Brenda Little had grown up. He had no particular reason for being there, other than that the first bus that had come along happened to be going in that direction. He found a shop and bought a three-pack of disposable razors. He went into the nearest pub and headed straight for the toilets, where he began to shave off his beard. There was no hot water, and he had no shaving soap. People came in and out of the toilets as he worked away at the beard. Remarks were made. It took a long time to shave, and the result was imperfect.

Was his face visibly bleeding when he exited? I don’t know, but it seems hard to imagine that he shaved off a full beard without soap or hot water and managed not to shed any of his own blood.

He emerged from the toilets, and went to the bar and ordered a sparkling water. There was a pay phone in the back. He got some change at the bar and called a taxi. He drank his water, and he waited.
