Chapter Thirteen

Caeas

His reunion with Duriah went well. Beyond well. A dinner invite was not to be taken lightly. It meant the respected Aelv was willing to make time for whatever he had to say and there was much to discuss.

His hand drifted up to squeeze the curve of Halaema’s waist. At that moment, he felt victorious even knowing the true battle was still ahead of him.

He stole a glance at her, and she appeared to be lost in her own thoughts, her eyes staring ahead and distant. What would she be doing now if their paths had never crossed? He dashed the thoughts away. They became painful reminders of how divergent their paths were and how their association would end sooner rather than later.

“With Duriah’s assistance, I will get the chance to reclaim my name,” Caeas said, though he didn’t know whether he was saying it to Halaema or as a prayer to the gods. A positive affirmation to bolster him in the face of the gnawing uncertainty that had already begun to creep in under his positive mood.

“Just make sure to tell him everything,” Halaema replied, and her eyes cut to him. “Allies generally do not like surprises.”

Caeas inwardly winced. Of the two of them, she was the one with the least amount of danger hanging over their heads.

The walk to the inn was long enough to see more of the quarter and they took in the scenery, allowing the silence to stretch between them. He didn’t know how much Halaema knew about the inner workings of the high court but there was a chance there would be a significant delay in their departure from Myrenden.

No matter the course Duriah suggested, there were going to be hurdles. The Dominion could not function without them. He wondered just how willing she would be to stay with him until his reputation was restored.

His eyes moved to the sway of her hips as they entered their room. Having Halaema behind closed doors had almost become an addiction for him. The game of pursuit an intoxicating dance of push and pull. In the light of the day star, they were thief and Iron Hand. But behind a plank of wood and the flickering of lamp flame, they were male and female.

He lowered his pack to the floor, his eyes trained on her as she moved about the room.

“If I am remembering well, Duriah is wise and even-tempered,” Caeas began. “I think you will enjoy his company.”

“Oh?” Halaema asked as she walked to the window. “I think I want to see a bit more of the city.”

Caeas frowned. “The dinner invite was extended to both of us.”

He would not admit that he did not want her to leave his side, that there was something about her presence that made him feel as though the road ahead of him was not so treacherous.

She approached him then, a coy smile on her lips. “So you want me to go to dinner with you?”

His mouth opened, then closed.
