a quantity of work [and also to Figure 35, which is a graphical representation of the relation of p, v' — V, and TT].

In the case now to be consid-eredy the relations are not quite so simple, since the pressure, instead of remaining constant as in the above case, continually changes with the volume until it reaches the value p'. We have not th^n merely to add together the values of dv; the sum of the endless number of infinitely small quantities of work pdv must be found, where the value of j? is no longer a constant but a function of v, or in other words, where the value of p depends upon and varies with the value of v. The quantity of work involved during the change in volume and pressure of the perfect gas is given by the equation,
