John huffed out a loud breath. He was agitated at the interaction between Curtis and Rachel. Why, he wasn’t sure, since he’d been the one who suggested this whole courting thing. He led Curtis to the parlor, and they both stood by the fireplace to talk. John stuck his thumbs in his jeans pockets, anxious to hear the latest.

Curtis removed his gloves, stretching his hands toward the fire. “Levi is back with the nitre—by the way, that’s short for nitrogen. Anyway, the instructions say to add it to the feed once a week. I suggest we round up all the calves and get started early.”

“I agree. If any of them looks sick or gives you the slightest indication that something is wrong, leave them. I’ll be out there once you bring them to the corral.” John rubbed his chin, thinking.

“I’ll bid you a good night then,” Curtis said. He turned to leave, then looked back. “Oh, I meant to thank you for encouraging me to speak with Rachel about seeing her. She’s a fine woman and intelligent too.”

John nodded and walked Curtis to the door. “See ya first thing in the morning then.” John stood still for a moment, noticing the rain had nearly stopped but the wind was still blowing. He shuddered, wearily climbing the stairs to his bedroom. He’d deal with the accounts later when Rachel could look them over.

On the landing he paused, staring at Rachel’s door. No light filtered from beneath it. Apparently, she’d gone to bed early as well. It won’t be long before my role as her protector will no longer be needed. Not if Wyatt or the pastor had anything to do with it. Or Curtis. He sighed deeply and walked on past her door.
