Paisley stuffed her clean clothes into drawers and on hangers. The dinner bell had gone ten minutes ago. Of course, she was late. Some things never changed.
âAre you coming?â Cadence called from the other room.
âYup!â Paisley grabbed her phone from its charger and shoved it in her hip pocket before shrugging into a still-warm flannel shirt. She dashed into the main room where Cadence stood by the door. âIâm ready!â
âLetâs go then.â Cadence shook her head and held the door for Paisley to precede her.
âNo golf cart?â Paisley asked. âWe have to hoof it?â
âYep. We need to hurry.â
âYou just want to see Graham.â
âGuilty as charged. Although Iâm hungry, too. I was in the lodge earlier and it smelled delectable.â
âEven though I wasnât in charge of the camp kitchen, I felt like everything was on me, you know? Iâm so glad to just show up for a meal again and then leave, knowing other people are paid to cook and do dishes.â
âItâs a sweet gig, thatâs for sure. And wasnât Weston the one in charge?â
âOf his own stuff.â Paisley shrugged as they lengthened their strides. âBut I planned all the activities, so a lot still fell on me.â
âBut the other female chaperone ran the kitchen?â
âYes, but what about âI still felt in chargeâ are you missing? Someone had to oversee the whole thing. And donât say Weston just because heâs a Sullivan or male.â
âOkay, I wonât.â Cadence giggled. âI kept hoping youâd come back all triumphant that youâd finally snagged your man.â
âAs if.â
âHey, where did your optimism go?â
âIt took a deep dive in a mountain lake so cold the ice had barely melted.â Right along with Matthew Amstutz.
âThatâs very specific.â
âIt was a cold lake.â And sheâd relished her hardiness at watering the horses until Weston blamed her for abetting Matthewâs rebellion.
âYouâll have to share some photos of the trip with me to put on social media. Maybe we can get more groups requesting out-trips like that. What do you think?â
âMy phone went dead almost immediately, so I donât have many pictures. Youâll have to ask Weston or the Littles.â
Cadence glanced at her. âTheirs didnât die?â
âApparently not.â They might have started with topped-up batteries. Or remembered to turn their devices onto airplane mode. But Weston had actually used his phone quite a lot, even so. Hmm.
âI canât imagine going without technology for days. What if something happened, and I didnât know about it?â
âNothing ever happens.â Not that Paisley had even checked her emails or messages since theyâd returned. Sheâd stuck it on the charger then stayed busy with her reports and laundry. Now, as they neared the lodge, she pulled it from her pocket and turned it on. Not that anyone ever contactedâ â
Whoa. A whole slew of messages from her sister filled the screen. Paisley frowned. What on earth did Kait want that desperately? They often went weeks without any contact.
She thumbed into the texting app and scanned the list. Her blood chilled, and she stopped in the middle of the road.
âYou okay? You look like youâve seen a ghost.
