Abigail gave a nod, smiling back at him. “Blondies it is.”

The sound of a buggy approaching caught her attention and she glanced up. It was the Fishers: Edna, John and more children in their wagon than seemed possible to fit in the rear. They slowed, then seeing June, waved as they passed.

“Good to see all’s well, ends well,” Edna called.

Abby waved back, thankful the Fishers didn’t stop to ask where they had found her mother. She didn’t know if her mother would be embarrassed by the truth, but even if her mother wouldn’t be, Abigail wasn’t ready for questions. She wasn’t ready to discuss her mother’s situation with people she barely knew.

They drove the last half mile in comfortable silence. Then, just as Ethan went to make the turn into their driveway, her mother said from the back seat, “Supper.”

“We already planned our supper, Mam. We’re having the rest of that roaster we made yesterday,” Abby said over her shoulder. “And creamed cabbage and greens with mustard sauce. We picked those nice greens yesterday, you and I.”

“I’m not asking what we’re having for supper tonight,” her mother declared indignantly. She leaned forward, thrusting herself between Ethan and her daughter. She looked at Ethan. “Come to supper. Not tomorrow night. Not the next night. The next one.” She touched her hand to her forehead. “I don’t know what day that is, offhand, but that day. You know which one I mean.”

“Wednesday,” Abby supplied, not sure if she liked the idea or not of having Ethan to supper. It certainly seemed like the right thing to do. Without Ethan’s help, she didn’t know how long it would have taken to find her mother.

Nonetheless, once she issued the invitation to supper, she fretted. There was no telling what her mother might say or do. Her mother might be perfectly fine. But she might also come to the supper table wearing her winter wool cloak, or worse, an undergarment over the top of her clothes. Or she might tell a tale of when she grew up living in a cookie house. It had happened before. It was a realistic concern.

“Wednesday,” her mother repeated, still addressing Ethan. “Come Wednesday. Have supper, then you and my daughter can take a walk down to the pond.” She poked him with one of her tiny, bony fingers. “It’s a nice place for walking, our pond.”

Abby was sure her face turned bright red. She couldn’t look at Ethan. “Mam,” she chastised. “Ethan doesn’t want to walk to the pond. You invited him for supper.”

They turned into the driveway and suddenly Abigail remembered her son. “Jamie,” she said. She’d been so caught up in the drama of her missing mother, and then the whole thing with Ethan that she had forgotten about her son. She brought her hands to her cheeks. “He’s still at your place,” she told Ethan.

“I’ll go back, fetch him and bring him home.” He glanced at her as they rode up the driveway. “Unless you want to ride back to my place with me.
