Jackson clenched his jaw as he strode through the halls of the Senate Office Building. He’d gotten a text late last night from his journalist friend and had passed the information on to Senator Carson, but the news this morning still had fire coursing through his veins. Anyone who would believe that she was capable of turning a blind eye to illegal toxic waste disposal was out of their mind. She was a woman who took her state, the great state of Virginia, and its ability to produce food for its residents, as well as food to be used in commerce, very seriously. Maybe she hadn’t run on an agricultural platform, but that didn’t mean she would condone toxic waste dumping.

People looked at him out of the corner of their eye as he zipped past. Conversations quieted, then resumed in force when he was just out of range. He should turn around and let them have it—though that would do no good. It would just confirm the rumor in their mind. You didn’t get your name cleared by protesting innocence. Not in politics. You needed proof. Senator Carson had better have some or she was doomed. And he’d be sunk right along with her. It wasn’t easy to recover from something like this. Everyone expected the staff to know what was going on behind closed doors, regardless of how many times it was proven not to be the case. He trusted Senator Carson. Please, God. Don’t let that make me a fool.

He rapped on the door to the conference room where the Senator had barricaded herself with her Chief of Staff and a few other advisors.

“Come in.”

Jackson pushed open the door, closing it behind him. “You wanted to see me, Senator?”

“Ah, Jackson. Perfect. Everyone knows Jackson Trent, right?”

Heads around the room nodded.

“He’s coordinating the fundraiser next month. And, as luck would have it, our catering choice provides a particularly good opportunity for some positive press in the midst of the current climate. Jackson, would you give everyone the executive summary of Taste and See’s philosophy?”

Jackson schooled his expression. Why did she need him to do that? She knew all the details just as well as he did. He’d tried to talk her out of using Paige. Maybe they’d laugh about that with their kids someday. He cleared his throat. “You’ve probably already given them the basics, but Ms. Jackson is committed to locally sourced, naturally grown foods. So her menus are all based on seasonal availability. Additionally, she’s focused on sustainable living. So she strives to eliminate waste in her cooking.”

“What does that last part mean?” A man, probably in his mid-forties, sitting three chairs down from the Senator leaned forward as he asked the question. What was his name? They’d met at a meeting a few months ago.

“Basically that she won’t order two-hundred chicken breasts for a banquet. Instead she works to create menus that will use the whole chicken so she knows that animals aren’t being butchered for a single cut of meat.
