Jonathan couldn’t believe his luck. Not only did Susan still trust him, she told him her whole security plan. Stupid woman. It wouldn’t do her much good to increase her security tomorrow when he’d be long gone with the money tonight. He waited until he heard the apartment door close, and then silence. She left her purse behind. No matter, she wouldn’t be saying anything he needed to hear tonight. He already knew everything he needed to know. Tonight was the night.

He packed the apartment of the few belongings he cared about. The few pieces of second-hand furniture could stay. He wouldn’t need them once he got his dad’s money. He’d been watching all of Susan’s moves, and she hadn’t been to the bank. The money must be in the apartment somewhere, and he’d have all night to look for it. With one last stroke of brilliance, he made a plan to call Susan the next day before jumping on a plane. He’d tell her about his poor sick brother, and how he had to fly out to be with him. He wouldn’t be able to see her for a while, but he would miss her terribly. That would throw any suspicion off him for leaving suddenly.

He stopped packing his bag for a minute. He would miss Susan. For all her ridiculous God talk, she was a lot of fun to be with, and definitely attractive. If she weren’t so religious, he would have made a move on her. He shook his head. Enough of this. It would all be over soon and he’d have so much money women wouldn’t be a problem. Now he just needed to wait long enough to be sure Susan was asleep.

Two hours later, he again picked the lock to Susan’s apartment. Casting his gaze about, all was clear. Knowing now the room he had previously entered was Claire’s room, he moved further down the hallway to the next door and opened it. The sight stopped him in his tracks.

Standing in front of him, gun drawn, was one of the local Pine Springs police officers.

Before he could move, a second officer stepped behind him and cuffed him. Curses flew from Jonathan’s mouth.

“Watch, it, buddy,” the older officer said. “None of that talk is allowed in the home of the Pine Springs Angel. You have the right to remain silent…”

Early the next morning, Susan was awakened by the ringing of her phone.

Claire still slept peacefully

Mac was sitting across the room, leaning against a wall, eyes wide open. He raised an eyebrow.

Susan grabbed the phone and looked at the time. 5:45 AM. Mrs. Fulton was improving. She took a deep breath. “Good morning, Mrs. Fulton. What can I do for you?”

“You didn’t answer your phone last night. There were lights flashing everywhere. What was going on in our building?”

She couldn’t tell Mrs. Fulton there was an attack in the building. She’d never hear the end of it. “A young man fell and hit his head and got knocked out.
