“What? No!” Zane’s tanned face went as white as his shirt. “Don’t you think I’d have said so a long time ago?”

Aurora glanced about. They were in a very public place, which lent propriety to their being alone together. But it made continuing a very personal, private conversation difficult. If anyone saw them enter the boardinghouse together and her grandmother wasn’t there, she was going to create gossip.

“Come this way,” she said, grabbing his hand and towing him toward the southern edge of town.

Zane followed, looking confused. “I thought you wanted to get back to the boardinghouse.”

“I will. Later.”

“Where are we going?”

“Church.” On a Wednesday evening the building should be empty, and who would object to the two of them spending an hour or so in the sanctuary . . . praying? Of course she would pray with him. That made perfect sense.

“Aurora.” His tone was the same one her sisters used when she was being mule-headed.

“Don’t worry, I’m not going to make you get baptized or anything.”

“I’ve already been baptized. I’m a Christian, and I don’t object to going to church, as you already know. I just don’t know why we have to go right now.”

She turned down a side street that led to the back of the church. “Because we need privacy, and the church is the only place appropriate I can think of. Gil always has Wednesday dinner with a parishioner, but he leaves the building open for people to come in and pray if they want to.”

“Does he live in the church?” Zane asked incredulously.

“No, of course not. He has a little house next door, though, and he’d come in and be nosy if he saw us in the sanctuary.” Aurora blew out an unladylike noise that would have horrified her grandmother. “Gil is a pill. Yes, that rhymes, and isn’t that satisfying?”

She heard Zane chuckle behind her, which made her smile. One could be serious and have fun at the same time, a little-known fact that gave her a small edge in keeping a sunny attitude. Within a couple of minutes, they’d walked down the path between the church building and the parsonage and ducked around the corner to the front door. As she’d predicted, it was unlocked.

Aurora peeked into the entryway. Empty, also as expected. Pulling Zane behind her, she opened one of the double doors that led into the sanctuary. They stood at the back of the center aisle, facing the altar rail with its pulpit and choir loft. The piano, where Joelle played the hymns every Sunday, was over to the left. There was a sad arrangement of dying hydrangeas on the altar. Somebody should throw it out.

Now that she was here, she felt a little peculiar. She still clasped Zane’s hand, and she would have let go, but his grasp was firm and warm. And very masculine, with long fingers, calloused palm, no rings of any sort. That should have been a clue that he wasn’t married—although not all men wore wedding rings, most did.
