Therapeutic Interventions

66.What Are the Insight-Oriented Interventions?

The interventions of clarification, confrontation, and interpretation are the ones most usually associated with insight-oriented work. Clarification (Bibring, 1954) means to see things in a clearer way. It refers to matters that are conscious or subconscious but not unconscious. Clarification helps the patient to become clearer about feelings, attitudes, thoughts, behavior patterns, and perceptions. The therapist often uses clarification to help the patient bring together contradictory attitudes, behavior, and ideas.

Confrontation is a subcomponent of clarification (Meissner, 1980). Clarification usually appears more neutral on the part of the therapist, whereas confrontation involves a more intrusive stance. Confrontations are sometimes designed to create conflict in instances in which there previously had been none.

Interpretation (Bibring, 1954) strictly deals with unconscious material. It can refer to both defenses and that which is defended against. It often provides an explanation or a hypothesis about conscious behavior. Interpretations are often preceded by numerous clarifications. The following are examples.
