7. The Section Foreman Is Fired:
As soon as the problem of the lost money was settled, another issue appeared. The section foreman was told that he would be transferred to another factory.
In this connection it is necessary to record that at that time a new manager of the weaving shop was already present. We saw him walking with the plant director, who was showing him around. Since he seemed to be busy and naturally not familiar with the new job and its problems, we did not contact him until on August 21, asking him about the reported dismissal of the section foreman.
The new manager: âYesterday there was a meeting organized by the plant director and attended by the departmental party secretary, the labor union secretary, the shift supervisor, and myself. The section foreman was relieved of his job because the plant director was not satisfied with his achievement. Presumably, the section foreman himself had already asked for the release. He does not seem to care too much about his job. Anyhow, I am completely new on the job; I really donât know the background of the whole story.â
The section foreman was upset. When I met him, he refused to talk to me, stating that he would never trust anybody. Foreman I told me later that he was suspicious that my colleague or I had reported him to the plant director. However, the next day, the section foreman smiled when we showed up and talked to us again in a friendly way. He said he was sorry for what had happened the day before. However, he knew that we had nothing to do with his dismissal. Later, Foreman I told me that he had assured the section foreman that it was not our fault.
The section foreman maintained that the plant director had a grudge against him: âHe knows that I have more education, and he is after me. When the manager was fired, it was then my turn.â He said that the manager had told him privately that the plant director had maneuvered the manager out of his job; naturally, the people could not be told about it because they would dislike it and eventually make trouble. The section foreman felt that the plant director might think it over before firing him if he knew that people would start trouble.
Later, the section foreman reported that somebody had presumably denounced him. The same was confirmed by the plant director, whom we asked about the case of the section foreman. The plant director maintained that it was reported that the section foreman had approved of the tramworkersâ strike. Obviously, this was something one would not expect from a person in such a responsible position!
An older section foreman confirmed the above statement: âHe said something approving the strike. However, he is a party member and he can defend himself. I am not a party member. This is a purely dictatorial decision of the plant director. He tries to remove all persons who have good relations with people.
