Conclusion and key points

Once past the acute-onset state, OCD is best managed through close collaboration between parents, medical providers, and a mental health provider. Exposure and response prevention, while increasing your child’s distress at first, will eventually help your child to break free of some of the compulsions, rituals, and obsessive thoughts that may have characterized his or her illness. As mentioned previously, do remain in close contact with your medical provider, as a worsening of OCD symptoms can sometimes indicate a physical relapse or exposure to a new illness. In this case, you may work with your therapist to adjust or delay implementation of any new ERP treatment.

In particular, keep the following in mind:

— For children who are physically healthy enough to address OCD symptoms, consistent expectations and processes are key.

— Exposing your child to his or her feared triggers may provoke intense distress, even tantrums, but will eventually help him or her to realize that he or she will be okay and that the underlying fear is not rational.
