Guifi.net, in Catalonia, is a free, open and neutral, mostly wireless, telecommunications community network, with over 27,000 active nodes and about 36,400 km of wireless links. It was created in a mountainous area for which there was no state or commercial Wi-Fi provision. So local communities worked to provide internet access by constructing a commons-based telecommunications network, first through collaboration with Wi-Fi companies, and, since 2009, also with fibre optics. Eventually guifi. net built up a reputation, receiving several awards, including one from the Generalitat of Catalonia in 2007 for providing internet access to rural areas, and one in 2015 for the Best Project in the category of Innovative Models, Business and Finance, awarded by the European Commission for developing an alternative sustainable and collaborative model around the commons.
