Chapter Thirteen

“He’s here,” Nadine said, glancing out the front window. She dropped her crocheting into the basket next to the rocking chair and stood. She cast one last look at Charlotte, then started from the room.

Charlotte stood as well. “Where are you going?” She patted Amber on the back, trying to burp the baby before Glenn knocked on the door. She wasn’t sure that this new formula was sitting quite right with Amber. Charlotte wondered if the birth mom had been through something similar before determining that she couldn’t take care of the baby. Or maybe Amber had been on a different formula entirely. Charlotte had no idea. She didn’t have much experience with English baby formulas and, according to Nadine, there were about two thousand different kinds.

“I thought you might want some privacy.” Nadine nodded as if trying to convince Charlotte as well.

“That’s not necessary,” Charlotte said. But she and Nadine both knew she was only trying to make excuses. She was only trying to have a buffer between her and Glenn.

“I think I’ll just go upstairs and read.” Nadine was halfway to the second floor before Charlotte even took her next breath.

She needed to remain positive. For some reason, she had gotten it into her head that Glenn wasn’t going to be happy about her keeping Amber for a while. Why wouldn’t he be? It wasn’t like it was a forever sort of thing. Just the thought made her heart beat high in her chest. She wanted it to be forever. And maybe it would be, given a chance. But she wasn’t sure what God had in store for her. And Glenn had confessed his love. He had asked her to marry him—wasn’t that part of the wedding vows? Children or no children? Or maybe just good times and bad. But didn’t they both go together, almost the same thing?

Amber finally let out a burp as Glenn knocked on the door. Charlotte felt something warm and wet down her back. The baby had spit up.

No time for that now.

She crossed the room and opened the door, a bright smile on her face.

Glenn stood on the opposite side of the threshold. His smile froze, then fell from his face. “Whose baby?”

Charlotte continued to smile as she stepped back and allowed Glenn to enter the house. “It’s kind of a long story.” She handed him a burp rag, then turned her back to him. “Can you get that?”

She couldn’t see his expression since she wasn’t facing him, but she could hear the strain in his voice. “Get what?”

“The spit-up. I’m pretty sure she spit up on my back just before you knocked. Can you get it off for me?” There was a moment of thick silence; then she felt the towel and the pressure from his hand on her shoulder.

“There.” His voice was flat.

Charlotte turned around.

Glenn held out the burp rag as if it were contaminated with a deadly substance.

Charlotte took it from him. “Danki.”

He gave a quick nod and then strode even quicker to the kitchen.
