Addie practically flew up the street toward the funeral home. So much had happened in the space of an hour, her head spun. Learning about her ability hadnât been as scary as sheâd thought. In fact, it was liberating. Sheâd broken through the fear that had kept her cowering her whole life. She understood now. The Sight wasnât an affliction or a curse.
She had a gift.
So did Michael. He didnât have to drown the Sight anymore. His ability could be controlled. Sheâd have to tell him about their gift and Dunstan and what he had called her vibrations. And how he could help them both.
Later. When she came down from the clouds.
Dunstan had done that, made her feel as if she could walk on air. She wanted to hug him and thank him a dozen times over for helping bring her into the light. Maybe even kiss him. Of course, that would never do. He didnât want her to kiss him. He had Rosa for that. He probably drove like a madman at this very moment to go to her for their date tonight. He wouldnât give Addie a second thought.
She turned the corner into the alley and scuffed to a stop. Her father stood in front of the hearse, broom in hand, sweeping up glass. She sped down the cobblestones, her heart in her throat. The hearse windshield had been shattered. Glass sprayed across the vehicleâs front end like slivers of ice. The headlights had been smashed too. The light over the door glinted on the glass strewn on the ground.
Father swung on her, his face a storm cloud. âWhere have you been?â he demanded. âYou said you were going to lunch with Marta. Itâs after five. Iâve been worried about you.â
With good reason, Addie thought. A chill shivered down her spine at the memory of the man in the ratty sweater about to attack her. And he would have, if not for Dunstan.
âIâm sorry to worry you, Father,â she said, contrite. âWhat happened?â
âWhat does it look like happened? Hoodlums chucked bricks through the hearse window and kicked out the headlights.â The broken glass clinked as he swept with furious strokes.
Her shoulders sagged. He spoke as if it were her fault. At least it felt that way. âFather, you should call the police.â
âI will not. No one is to know, Adelaide. If anyone asks, tell them icicles fell and broke the window. We cannot afford to call attention to ourselves.â
Call attention to her, he meant.
He swept the glass from under the vehicleâs tires and pushed the whole pile against the building. âWait for me inside, child, before you catch your death of cold. I will be done soon.â
He didnât look at her and she didnât argue or offer to help. Why bother? He would be furious with her forever for what sheâd done. For bringing notoriety to the family, for turning suspicious eyes on them and ruining his business.
She huffed toward the door and threw it open, more determined than ever to go with Dunstan tomorrow and take his tests.
