On the morning of the science fair Brian and Penny put their costumes on to show their parents.

"You look so cute," said Mr. Casanova, getting out the video camera.

They were both wearing big, furry after-ski boots they had borrowed from their older cousins. Mrs. Casanova had allowed them to make clothes by cutting up an old fake-fur blanket that she had had since college.

Penny and Brian wrapped themselves up in fake fur and carried spears made out of mop handles. 'We look ridiculous," said Brian, feeling embarrassed. He didn't even like getting dressed up for Halloween.

"You look adorable," said Mrs. Casanova.

"Mammoth hunters are not supposed to be adorable," said Brian. "We're cold. We worship the mighty mammoth. His tough, shaggy coat keeps us warm."

"We only wear fake fur," said Penny.

Brian sighed. "Penny, the earliest humans did not wear fake fur."

"They should have," said Penny. "I wouldn't want anybody going around wearing Pea Sprout's coat."

"Just keep your mouth shut when the judges come around," warned Brian.

"Ma! Brian told me to shut up!" "I told you to keep your mouth shut—that's different."

"Now, Brian and Penny," said Mr. Casanova. "I've been so proud of the way you two have worked together on this project.

Don't spoil it now." Penny and Brian looked at each other. They could ruin their chances of winning if they fought. They didn't shake hands, but silently they decided on a truce.
