Obadiah had told me the night they returned that the first words Elliott had spoken were a plea for Emma. Obadiah had broken the news of her death as gently as he could.

“He just shut down after that, no matter that I told him he has a baby daughter waitin’ at home for her daddy. Never spoke one word more.”

“You did all you could, Obadiah, and I can’t thank you enough for going to get him. I’m sure it wasn’t easy.”

“No, Miss Minnie. Those Confederates were glad to see him go—one less mouth to feed. They weren’t payin’ him much mind. Too many wounded and dying to care for, too many dead and in need of buryin’. If I hadn’t been the only one to bring Mr. Elliott home, they’d have pressed me into service for burial detail.”

“Obadiah.” I didn’t know what else to say.

“We made it through by the grace of God Almighty. No other way around that. Through skirmishes and past ragtag home guard lookin’ for money and whiskey. We had nothin’ left to steal but our wagon and mule. I wasn’t sure we’d get past, but the Lord led us through that wilderness and brought us home.”

Home. Home for Elliott. Please, God. Let Elliott live long enough to see his daughter and to free our people, to make this land a real home for them, too.
