THE SPANISH BELL

The bronze bell that hangs behind the cabin was found in a scrap iron shipment sent to the Keeler Iron and Brass Works about 1895. It was given to the senator, who placed it where it still hangs, about one hundred feet west of the log cabin. An inscription inside the rim reads, “Paula Gomez made this 1793.” The legend sprang up that it once hung in the La Rabida monastery where Columbus stayed on his way to meet with King Ferdinand in 1492. It was rung occasionally to call picnickers to meals.
