“What the fuck! ”

He could think of no reason to put it off any longer, so he stepped

inside the house, his pistol leading the way. If he scared poor Mrs.

Andros to death, so be it. He’d apologize to her later. Right now he

didn’t feel like taking any chances.

It didn’t take him long to realize that he wouldn’t be needing to

apologize to anyone, except maybe that detective in San Diego who

was waiting for a call from these nice people. Boyd was pretty sure

they wouldn’t be calling anybody any time soon.

The furnace had either been turned off days ago or shut down on

its own after running out of fuel. The air inside the house was just as

mind-numbingly cold as the air outside. Colder, maybe. Like the cold

had really seeped into the walls and furniture and meant to stay a while.

Walter Andros, a mild-looking man with thinning blond hair

maybe a few years short of sixty, was sitting in a recliner, his feet

propped up for all the world like he had just come in from the field and

was taking a breather before getting up and going in to have his dinner.

There were a few things wrong with the picture, however. First of all, it

was obvious that Mr. Andros was frozen as solid as a tray of ice cubes.

Frost had settled into his open eyes. Boyd took a couple of steps closer

to him, not exactly sure of what he was seeing in the dim light. It

looked like the man was grinning at him. Then, with an almost audible

click, it registered with Boyd what he was truly seeing. He felt hot bile

burn in his throat as he quickly looked away. Mr. Andros had no lips.

They had been eaten away, along with most of one cheek. The cats. The

goddamn cats. They must have run out of Friskies and field mice and

decided to supplement their diet with frozen farmer for a change. Mr.

Andros’ teeth, obviously none too lovely when the man was alive,

looked a hell of a lot worse now, all exposed as they were. They

reminded Boyd of some long forgotten horror movie he had seen as a

child. Lord, those movies use to give him the fantods. He wasn’t too

sure he wouldn’t be having a few fantods after today either.

Tired of squinting in the dark room, and figuring there wasn’t

anything worse to see, he flipped on the overhead light and

immediately regretted it after getting a really good look at Mr. Andros

for the first time.
