3. Harlequins never have white ‘angel wings’

Some species of British ladybird, for example the 7-spot ladybird (below), have a black spot on the centre line of the elytra, just behind the pronotum, which has distinctive white patches each side. Although it is a bit of a fanciful idea, try and think of this as looking like an angel with white ‘angel wings’, with a round black body and a little black head in between the white wings.

Seven different species of British ladybird have distinct white ‘angel wing’ markings, but Harlequins never do.
