Chapter Ten

By the time Rosa awoke the next morning, she was starting to feel more like herself. She sniffled as she sat up and stifled a cough, thinking that she’d become a bit stuffy from sleeping for so long. She washed and dressed in her day gown.

As Rosa fixed up her hair, braiding her long curls, she reasoned that she better show Mrs. Tibet that she was a fine assistant since she’d needed to collapse the previous evening. The last thing she wanted her employer to think was that she was incapable of working in a demanding kitchen. Though Rosa didn’t think working at the inn was very strenuous, she nonetheless wanted to make a good impression anytime she could.

After Rosa had finished dressing and looked presentable, she put on her apron and left the bedroom. She could hear idle chatter coming from the dining room, and as she stopped by the door of the kitchen and turned her brown eyes towards the large room, she could see that there were a few patrons for breakfast. Thinking this was a good thing, Rosa made her way into the kitchen to see how she could help Mrs. Tibet.

“Hello, dear. Are you feeling better?” Mrs. Tibet asked the moment she walked through the double doors. Rosa nodded to reassure the older woman, doing her best to keep her chuckle to herself.

“I’m quite better, thank you,” Rosa replied. “It only seemed that I was still exhausted from my travels.” “That’s very understandable,” Mrs. Tibet said then proceeded to tell Rosa the menu for that evening and what it was going to be necessary to prepare. “Roast, veggies, and fresh bread is what’s on the menu for tonight. I normally like to serve two options, but I have a feeling it isn’t on the cards for today. Did you see how few we had in for breakfast?”

“There may be more than you expect,” Rosa said, but she was sure Mrs. Tibet was experienced in working out how many diners she would be cooking for. She started to prepare vegetables, wondering if Jacob would be calling in.

“Don’t worry about slicing them too big, dear. I often like to serve a healthy serving.” Rosa nodded as she did the work, wanting to do as her employer said. She was thinking that Mrs. Tibet was a very generous woman, very different from Mrs. Trevino, who would instruct the kitchen staff to serve small portions.

Soon, Rosa became lost in the rhythm of preparing, cooking and serving the food that Mr. Tibet would come into the kitchen for. Since there was only one menu that evening, it was simple enough work. With two women in the kitchen, Rosa was able to prepare each plate while Mrs. Tibet sliced the roast and divided out the veggies. At one point, Mrs. Tibet also made sure there was enough for herself, Mr. Tibet, and Rosa. She hadn’t spoken to Mrs. Tibet about pay and hoped that not too much would be docked for enjoying a meal with her employer as well.
