Later when I return to the prison, I hear the crackling on the radios when I make rounds in the prison. I think about calls for help that I receive—those other calls not transmitted on radios, and wonder if my responses to those calls made anyone’s life better as a result. Sometimes while talking with prisoners, I know I give them weary looks. Did I pay attention when a prisoner told me about an abuse that had occurred?

I remember talking with employees too who came to me with problems. I remember asking, Are you sure this is a problem? Are you certain you’re not overreacting? Sometimes there was no way to tell if I helped someone. I didn’t know if I fixed anything. The terrain of management is full of ambiguities of judgments and questions without answers.

The physicality of what Kasey experienced directly—the assault, the call for help, and the assistance—struck me. Her work on the radios is as tangible as a slap. There’s no mistaking it; either those radios are fixed or they are not.
