The day before Easter Deana spent hours in the kitchen working hard on the next day’s dinner. She was roasting a ten pound pork loin. Everyone had liked her cheese mashed potatoes and fried okra, so she was making them again. Claire was going to bring a few of her sides.

Deana was not really looking forward to another trip to the elder Samuels’, but she wanted to be a team player. If she was going to be part of this family, she had to figure out how to co–exist with Lester, Claire and Julie. The restaurant was closed for Easter so she couldn’t leave early to go to work. It could be a long day.

Matthew, Mark, Luke, Leon and Deana arrived in Athens just before one o’clock. Deana’s dinner looked phenomenal and everyone was impressed as Leon, Matthew and Mark brought Deana’s food into the Samuels’ kitchen. Deana was walking with Luke, holding his hand.

Julie and Gracie had the table all set. Claire brought corn and apple sauce. Deana didn’t think it was really fair she had ten times the expense and had to do ten times the work, but she didn’t say anything.

Dinner was fantastic. It was one benefit of minimizing Claire’s participation. Everyone was complimentary towards the meal and everyone seemed happy. There was even an Easter egg hunt put together for the children after dinner.

Later in the afternoon, Lester pulled Deana aside. He asked if he could talk to her. He seemed more polite and subdued than usual.

“I know you are probably mad at me,” Lester began. “You have every right to be upset. I interfered in your affairs and I apologize for that. But, Leon is my little brother, my only sibling. I have always been the one who looked out for him. I wasn’t trying to break you two up. He loves you too much for that. I just thought he was going too fast with you.”

“To be honest, Lester, I would be disappointed if you weren’t concerned about your brother. I know it seems like I came out of nowhere and because of that maybe there is distrust. I wish I was the girl next door from your childhoods. I wish I was someone you were comfortable with. I don’t have that luxury. All I can do is promise you this; I won’t be just a good wife to Leon, I will be a great wife. I won’t be just a good mother to your nephews, I will be a great mother. I don’t do things half way or half hearted. I excel at everything I do. That’s who I am.”

Lester had no response. After a minute or two he just walked away.

The following evening, Deana and Leon were watching television. Leon was watching a fishing show.

“From what I’ve been learning at the restaurant,” Deana said, “an awful lot of Georgians like to fish. Leon, do you like to fish?”

“When I was in my teens, my dad bought a used johnboat. We would take it out on the lake up by our house two or three times a week,” Leon reminisced.
