Amelia had some serious misgivings the next morning as she stood before her mirror. She’d pressed the black dress until it was stiff enough to rustle over the petticoat she’d also starched to within an inch of its life. The garments were respectable and modest, and black—the color of mourning and repentance.
Her hair was gathered into a low knot at the back of her head and a small hat complete with veil hid her eyes and forehead. She twirled her gold wedding ring on her fingers, letting the small diamond in the center wink and flash a few times before reaching for the black gloves, giving her stockings one more check, and sliding her feet into her shoes.
The purse she took was also black, a modest little thing made of straw and with a polished bone buckle and snap. She let herself out of the house and immediately turned around and went back inside. It was far hotter outside than she’d expected and so she added a second dusting of talc to the skin of her armpits.
Her dress had clever little bands that held the scented pads that rested in the hollows of her armpits in place. She hoped they and the talc would keep sweat stains from showing there. A woman with armpit stains was looked upon as slovenly and never mind that it was hotter than the hinges of Hell out there!
“Lord help me, I’m worried about looking proper,” she muttered as she set out again.
Meeks on a Sunday morning was sleepy and quiet. No business was open yet, though June’s and several others would open right after church let out. The streets had a sleepy, hushed air despite the occasional grumble of an automobile passing by and the small groups of people walking to their various churches.
She paused again when she reached the church. The green lawn that stretched away from the small white clapboard building was filled with people. Her nerves began to scatter and break as faces turned toward hers.
The bell rang and the church doors opened. Amelia took a deep breath. She spotted her father standing nearby with Minnie and her surly daughter Sandra. To complicate matters Ninny and Louella had taken up positions next to Minnie, who looked as if she might fall down dead of a heart attack at any moment.
Ninny and Louella were clearly offering support to Minnie. That made Amelia’s teeth gnash together.
She thought, of course they’re acting like Minnie needs comfort right now. In their minds Minnie’s the innocent victim of her marriage and wayward round-heeled step-daughter and never mind that the real truth of that whole thing’s that I was the victim, that I was always the victim.
Reverend Paul came down the steps and into a barrage of whispers and pointed glances. Amelia met his gaze squarely. She wanted to try to look humble and meek but she was angry now, and her courage was threatening to walk away from her. She knew if she left now that would be it, she might as well consign herself to never being accepted again.
