Self-care is important

As a professional, you come into contact with many human beings who are looking to you for help, whether that is as a classroom educator, counselor, art therapist, social worker or urologist, for example. When I worked as a social worker in the substance abuse behavioral health field, I became acutely aware of this. At times, I just wanted to go into my left brain and forget about having a heart, the clients’ needs were so great. It’s easy to get burned out or close to it. I felt very “stretched” at times as well as experiencing some compassion fatigue. Self-care is important. I created “watering holes” ways to rest rejuvenate and recharge. You probably have your own; if not, ask yourself what will recharge you. What is life giving for you, meaning what fills you back up with energy, strength and joy?
