He was waiting for her outside the restaurant when she arrived. For a moment, she wished she wore something other than her scrubs, but she quickly reminded herself this wasn’t a date. Like she told her friends, it was an exchange of information over a shared meal.

But when Cade put his hand on her waist and ushered her inside, it certainly felt like a date. Especially when he insisted on paying.

‘Their’ table by the window was free, so they gravitated to it without question, sliding into the booth seats opposite one another. Side by side was nice, but so was face to face, particularly with a face as handsome as Cade’s.

“This is the first time I’ve been here since it’s changed hands,” Cade said. “You?”

“First time for me, too,” she admitted. As silly as it seemed, she hadn’t felt right about coming here without him.

Recently, one of the owners had been killed in a hit and run accident that turned out to be no accident at all, and the other faced time in prison on a multitude of charges. Some of the staff and long-time manager Delores Mendoza had pitched in to buy the original downtown Bryan location and keep it running, even though the other two locations were forced to close.

“I have a confession to make,” Cade said, leaning across the table to speak in a conspiratorial tone. “I heard they were running a GoFundMe page to raise money to salvage the cafe.” His brown eyes twinkled with a secret. “I made a contribution.”

Laurel leaned in and made her own confession in a loud whisper. “So did I.”

Cade captured her hand across the scarred vinyl four top. It felt intimate when his fingers entwined with hers.

“As much as I like the idea of us both having a stake in this place,” he told her, “when I do take you on that much-anticipated date, I promise it will be some place that has linen tablecloths and true waiters.”

“I don’t care about fancy,” Laurel replied, biting back the urge to add that she only cared about being with him.

“No, but you deserve it.”

They shared a silly smile, which was interrupted when the server brought their meal to the table. “21?” he confirmed, exchanging the loaded tray for the numbered flag.

“That’s us.”

Sorting the order and settling the shared queso and chips between them, they dug into their meal with gusto. They kept the conversation to safe topics as they ate, but when Cade went back to order sopapillas and churros, Laurel sensed that was about to change. He slid into the seat beside her, daring her to kill the easy vibe they had going.

Drizzling a sugar-dusted sopapilla with honey, he offered Laurel the first bite. His dark gaze followed the tip of her tongue as she licked the powdered sugar from her lips.

“So good,” she murmured, pretending not to notice the hunger in his eyes.

“I intend to find out.” His mumbled reply was cryptic, but the look in his eyes left her heart thumping out a noisy beat.
