Chapter 9

A few weeks later, on a sunny Saturday morning, Rose approached the opera house. She hadn’t seen Patrick since he had rejected her, and she hoped to avoid him today. When would she learn to keep her mouth shut? She had pushed him into a corner. He saw her as a little sister, not as a woman.

She wouldn’t think about Patrick or about the embarrassing incident.

Today, she had come to meet Anna, Grace, and Laura, who had agreed to picnic with her at Barron’s Falls. Even though they couldn’t help her secure a place with the opera company, the girls in the chorus had become friends.

Rose opened the lobby door and stepped into the dim light. The girls had arranged to meet her here. She wouldn’t need to stay long.

Her gaze moved to Patrick’s office door.

Closed.

She willed it to stay closed until she had gone.

Anna, Grace, and Laura entered through a side door. They carried on a conversation about something that had happened in rehearsal the day before. Rose longed to be part of their world.

The chorus girls wore the dresses that Rose had sewn for them. Each had added a matching wide-brimmed bonnet. An actress wouldn’t want freckles.

When she saw Rose, Grace grinned and twirled in her new Western-style dress. “I love it. Rose, you’re a genius.”

Rose shrugged off the compliment. The dresses mimicked a modern style, with lines and fringes to give a touch of the Wild West. “I wanted you to be able to wear them as everyday dresses. Costumes would have been fun, but not particularly useful.”

Laura ran a hand down her tan skirt. “I can’t wait to show my friends back home.”

“I’m glad you like them.” Rose lifted her basket. “Are you ready for a picnic?”

“A real Western adventure. I can’t wait.” Anna stepped close and lifted the basket lid. “Smells wonderful.”

“I packed bread, cheese, beef, and cinnamon rolls.” Rose had included a knife, a canvas tarp to sit on, and other essentials in the basket. The girls trusted her to lead them into the mountains. A serious responsibility. In her family, no one expected her to lead anything.

“Yum. I can’t wait.” Grace adjusted her bonnet.

Patrick entered from the performance hall, followed by George.

Rose sucked in a breath and turned her attention to the girls. How soon could she leave?

Patrick strode toward his office. “There’s nothing wrong with your dressing room. You don’t need another buffalo robe.” He didn’t seem to notice her.

Rose hadn’t seen George since eavesdropping on him and Marian near her dressing room. The handsome blond man flashed a roguish grin, dulling her senses. He reminded her of a prince from a storybook.

“Ladies.” George gave a little bow. “Are we going on a picnic?” He reached toward Rose’s basket as if to take a peek inside.

Flashing him a smile, Laura slapped his hand. “We are going on a picnic. No men allowed.”

Grace took an exaggerated step toward the tenor. “Unless…”

“George. We have business.” Patrick glared at the man.

He might as well have said, “Run along now, girls.
