Chapter Eleven

“

et me take you home,” Matthew pleaded.

“No, thank you,” Jessica said. “I’ll be fine, Matthew. And there’s no reason you shouldn’t open The Secret Garden today.”

She didn’t want to tell Matthew that she wasn’t going home. And she certainly didn’t want to risk him getting involved any more than he already was. She had heard Mark tell Matthew that he was going to need to talk to him again about the murder, as well, and it just compounded her worry.

Matthew hesitated, but then agreed. “Okay,” he said, “Go get some rest. I’ll keep an eye on things over here and work with the sheriff to make sure everything gets cleaned and locked up for you. And I’ll see you in the morning.”

“Thank you for everything, Matthew,” she said. She wanted to hug him, but it also suddenly felt like maybe it would be inappropriate or forward. So, she waved, gathered her purse, and walked across the street to her car. “See you in the morning,” she called out to Matthew who stood on the front porch of his shop as she drove away.

On the road, she headed toward the Amish community. She remembered visiting Anna and Beth one time several months ago, and she hoped she could remember the directions to their home again. And she hoped that they would be home and up for a surprise visit, as well.

She found the matching houses easily, sitting side by side, and pulled into the dirt driveway. Shifting her car into park, she had no sooner turned off the engine and stepped out of the car when Anna appeared on the front porch, waving to her.

“Jessica! Good morning!” Her voice was cheery, but she wore a look of undeniable concern on her face.

“Hi, Anna! You’re a sight for sore eyes, I’ll tell ya!” Jessica said, walking briskly toward the house and mounting the steps quickly. She hugged Anna tight. “Where is your sister?” she asked.

She’s home, cleaning up after breakfast. “Good heavens, though, please tell me why you’re here and not at the diner,” Anna said, her forehead wrinkled.

“Well, that’s the reason I’m here, I’m afraid.” She looked at Anna and said, “It’s not good, Anna. It’s not.”

Anna bit her lip. “Please tell me, I’m so sorry to hear this, and I want to know how I can help.”

“I thought I heard talking out here!” Beth called out as she approached from the side of the house. “Anna, you didn’t tell me Jessica was coming over,” she teased her sister.

“Hi, Beth,” Jessica said. “I’m glad you’re here. I need to talk to both of you.”

“Why aren’t you at the diner?” Beth asked, “Is everything okay?”

Jessica shook her head, “No, I’m afraid everything is really not okay. I need your help more than ever right now.”

Anna gently grabbed each of them by their arms and ushered them into her living room. “Let’s have a seat. Does anyone want some tea?”

Beth and Jessica both politely declined as they got settled on either end of the couch.
