19. Critical Reading Strategies

Here's our three-step approach to handling the reading passages on the test. Phase 1 explains how to read the passage initially, Phase 2 focuses on how to attack the questions, and Phase 3 shows you how to identify and eliminate wrong answers and helps you recognize what to look for in a right answer. What's also important to underscore is that these strategies are secondary to concentration and focus.

Phase 1: Reading

The goal of the first phase is to understand the main idea of the passage. If you've been doing the op-ed exercise, this part should come easily.

• Preview:

∘ Read the italicized summary. (Right before each reading passage is a short introduction, which often provides helpful information.)

∘ Quickly scan the questions (not the answers, just the questions).
