Expect to Win

One of my favorite things to do at work is read letters or emails from customers who share their stories about how our products have made a positive difference in their lives or in their businesses. It makes me feel great.

One day, I got a letter from Mark Wilkerson, an executive for a major insurance company. One of our gift books inspired Mark to tell a story about how something his dad told him as a child had shaped his life. I’m sharing it with you because I think it’s wonderful advice for any leader.

When Mark was growing up, he loved baseball, and his dad was the coach of his Little League baseball team. He remembered his dad saying repeatedly, “Prepare for each play and know what to do with the baseball if it is hit to you. I want all of you to want the ball to be hit to you!”

His dad said, “Look over your options. Decide what you should do, take a deep breath, and let it out; raise up on your toes to be ready and say to yourself, ‘Hit the ball to me!’ Then if you make the play, be humble. If you make an error, put it behind you and keep doing the same thing on every pitch.”

At the end of Mark’s letter, he wrote, “Mr. Anderson, I want to share a poem with you that I wrote when my dad died in 1988.”

His poem certainly inspired me, and with Mark’s permission, I’m honored to share it with you.
