Note that the author does not try to talk us out of what we are feeling in response to these voices. Instead, she acknowledges the voices and also lets us know that they make it âhard to be presentâ with ourselves. The voice of the author, in this case, is one of understanding, of caring about your life and what you may be experiencing. We perhaps say to ourselves, âAh, what a relief! This is someone who understands what I go through every time I try to start something new.â
Another excellent way of creating a voice of understanding is to tell a story about yourself that shows how you relate to other people in your life. Hereâs an example from Christina Baldwinâs book Calling the Circle:
I believe that my most significant achievement in the first half of my life has been to restore my personal sanity: I am a functioning human being. I know how to think. I know how to feel. I know how to solve problems. I know how to communicate. I am willing to hold myself accountable. I can be in relationship. I practice prayer. This is what I have to offer the world.5
