ASSIGNMENT
Close your eyes and visualise your villain's workspace. If she has no workshop or office, imagine her kitchen, her garden shed or her car, wherever she hangs out a lot. Decide which of the features apply to your villain's lair, and jot down some descriptive notes.
Even if your reader never gets to see this place, this is an eye-opening exercise during which you can learn much about your villain's personality.
CHAPTER 9: HENCHMEN AND MINIONS
Most villains have subordinates or a social network they rely on.
Avoid the cliché of the villain who terrifies people into following him and who kills his lieutenants for the slightest mistake. These methods would work only in the short term because they inspire no loyalty. The unwilling followers would take the first opportunity to side with the hero and depose the villain.
The true villain inspires such loyalty and affection in his followers that they're willing to lay down their lives for him, swear false oaths to give him an alibi and trap the hero.
