ADDITIONAL CASE ANALYSIS

There were challenges to working with this family. An unwanted life course transition, the job loss of Joan’s husband, called into question her ability to maintain a caregiving role with her father. Despite this new information, Edward remained adamant that he was not leaving his home. But Joan was certain that she would have to return to work, and Beth could not afford to give up her full-time job. If Edward’s financial resources were plentiful, he could simply hire help during the day. They were not plentiful enough to do this, yet, like most senior adults, he made too much money per month to qualify for Medicaid-funded services.

Another challenge was the alliance of Beth with her father against Joan. When siblings share parent care but do not work collaboratively as a subsystem, conflict occurs. If it is not resolved, conflict threatens to break down the subsystem and, in this case, to break down home-based care for their father. Joan and Beth would be sisters long after their father is gone, so it was in their best interests to find a way to work together on this care issue.
