On the Job

Because of the hard work, potential dangers, and need for a commercial driver’s license, many trash and recycling jobs, even at the entry level, are available only to people over eighteen. But some jobs may be available for younger people; for example, a high school student might work summers as a sorter at a recycling center. Most workers who hope to advance begin as trainees, either during or after their college courses. Waste management trainees, for example, work under a waste management supervisor, following the supervisor’s directions, learning the duties of the position, and learning to meet the safety standards of the job. Management trainee programs are also available in the recycling field. For example, Sims Metal Management (one of the world’s leading recyclers of metals and electronics) has a rotational trainee program lasting eighteen to thirty-six months. During the program, trainees move through the various aspects of the business, learning about each and receiving real-world exposure and supervisory training.
