We really can’t Win Every Day without everyone.
“In the beginning,” Chris said, “say, for about the first five minutes, we didn’t have a plan.”
“We didn’t have a leader either,” Raj said. “If Brian hadn’t stepped up, we wouldn’t have had a chance.”
“I appreciate that, but here’s the truth,” Brian added. “The first plan we had wasn’t going to work. Clint recognized that and came to me. That’s when I said ‘big guys first.’ We called an audible based on new information.”
“Good, anything else?” Tom asked.
“We physically helped each other do what we couldn’t do alone. It’s kind of like helping a guy make a critical block,” Ruben added.
“You guys also helped me emotionally,” Jacob said. “I am really scared of heights—when I was on top of the wall, I thought I was going to die. Mike encouraged me. Just knowing you guys were there, and the fact that the coach put some spotters on the back side, really helped me a lot.”
“Encouragement is a powerful thing,” Tom affirmed. “We’re all going to find ourselves on top of a wall at some point. We will need each other to get through it.
“Anything else?” Tom asked. No one appeared to have anything to say. “No? Then I have one more question: did you challenge each other?”
“Not really. We just did what Brian told us to do,” Luis said.
“Well, I’m not sure that’s accurate,” Brian added. “Although Clint is soft-spoken, he was really challenging me when he questioned our plan.”
“Tim wasn’t soft-spoken when he challenged me,” Clint said.
“Tim, tell us what was going on in your head in the moment,” Tom asked.
“It was simple. I realized I probably couldn’t reach Jamal’s hand. Clint is about six inches taller than me. I wasn’t sure he could reach it either, but with thirty seconds to go, we didn’t have time to debate it. I made the call—he was our best last chance at success, not me.”
“That was an outstanding challenge,” Tom said. “I wondered if you were going to make the adjustment or not.
“Okay, are you ready for the third and final fundamental? If we are going to Win Every Day, we must Pursue Mastery, Own the Numbers, and Help Others Win. You did this today, and you’ll need to do it every day if we are going to reach our full potential. What does it mean to Help Others Win? Shout it out.”
“Encourage.”
“Lead.”
“Challenge.”
“Plan.”
“Train.”
“Listen.”
“Anything else?” Tom asked.
“Celebrate,” Ben added.
“Absolutely,” Tom affirmed.
“Let’s never miss the chance to celebrate.
“Over the course of the season, we’ll learn more ways to Help Others Win. The most important part of this fundamental is for each of you to acknowledge the fact that we cannot Win Every Day without each other; just like we couldn’t have gotten over the wall as individuals—you did it together. You still have to make your individual contributions for sure, but the better we are at helping others win, the better we will be as a team.”
