Diagnosing Dysbiosis

Dysbiosis causes signs and symptoms similar to poor digestion: abdominal pain, belching, bloating, and gas. Fungal overgrowth such as candida yeast can cause additional signs and symptoms: thrush (white-coated tongue), recurring vaginal infections, jock itch, athlete’s foot, fingernail infections, or an itchy anus. In addition, dysbiosis should be considered when there are nonspecific changes in laboratory biomarkers. For example, when your doctor looks at the results from your complete blood count (CBC), he or she may find that you are mildly anemic from poor absorption of iron, or have an elevated mean corpuscular volume (MCV), which is indicative of a vitamin B12 or folate insufficiency. These may be not just random deficiencies but indications that you’re not absorbing nutrients efficiently. Dysbiosis is a frequent contributor to malabsorption.

Specialty labs have an array of tests available for diagnosing dysbiosis. A stool analysis, the hydrogen breath test, the urine organic acids test, and the lactulose-mannitol test can all be useful in determining the extent and cause of microbial imbalance. H. pylori can be specifically diagnosed through breath testing, serum antibodies, and stool analysis. If you have osteoporosis and are experiencing digestive problems, talk with your doctor about which test would be most helpful in diagnosing your problem.
