CHAPTER EIGHTEEN
Carter was speaking to one of his mother’s friends when he looked over to see Grace talking to Cecile. At the first opportunity, he took his leave and all but ran to Grace’s side.
“Well,” he said, when he finally reached them. “I’m glad to see the two of you have met.”
“You didn’t tell me how beautiful Grace is,” said Cecile. “We were just discussing her lovely gown. It looks to be London-made.”
“Thank you,” said Grace. “Lady Endicott has been most generous. She introduced my sister and me to her favorite modiste and we are both most pleased with the results.”
“It was very kind of Lady Endicott to be so generous with you. I wonder why she is taking such an interest.”
“She is a lovely lady and my sister and I enjoy spending time with her very much.”
Carter appreciated the fact that Grace hadn’t told Cecile that Lady Endicott’s generosity – which Carter was determined to repay – had more to do with that lady’s marital aspirations for Grace than any idle philanthropy. Even if he and Cecile weren’t bound for the altar, he had a feeling she wouldn’t take kindly to the news.
“How nice,” said Cecile, with a smile which didn’t reach her eyes, but then, her smiles rarely did. “What are your plans for London?”
“My sister and I have matters to attend to with our man of business, and we will pay a call on our cousin, as well.”
“He hasn’t been seen much,” said Cecile. “You should tell him it is every earl’s responsibility to make himself known among his peers. I suspect he will wish to marry soon and set up his nursery. After all, there are those who’ve been persuading Carter to do the same for years. Haven’t they, dear?” She then put her arm through Carter’s.
Carter almost groaned aloud. There was nothing he could do without being unforgivably rude. Grace showed no reaction, but Carter suspected she was hurting inside.

Jeremy Beckett had been wary of returning to life in the ton and normalcy would take a while to get used to. Through years of intrigue while working for the Foreign Office, he had risked his life on numerous occasions. He still sprinkled shells on the floor in front of the door and windows of his apartment to alert him to intruders at night. He had left the service, but that did not mean he didn’t have enemies in the world, some of whom were still angry enough to kill him.
As an operative, he knew one of the easiest places to attack an enemy was in a noisy, crowded room, especially if it offered various exits. An overflowing ballroom with a wall of French doors opening to the terrace, as well as half a dozen hallways leading into the mansion offered any number of escape routes. The full orchestra was loud enough to muffle a scream if an assailant timed the attack with precision. Jeremy had no reason to believe he was being targeted
