THE DOWNSIDE OF ANTIBIOTICS

One reason life expectancy in this country has increased so significantly over the last fifty years is antibiotics. These seemingly magical drugs can wipe out bacteria like a bleach wipe cleaning a dirty counter. Unfortunately, they take more of a “weapons of mass destruction” approach than a smart-bomb approach, wiping out all bacteria, the good as well as the bad.

The thing is, your vagina relies on good bacteria called lactobacilli to maintain normal pH. If the lactobacilli are killed by antibiotics, other organisms can take hold. Next thing you know, you have the familiar itchiness and discharge of a yeast infection.

Many women with dyspareunia report that their pain began just after a yeast infection and got worse during yeast infections. In one study of a thousand women, about 10 percent had symptoms of vulvodynia, and 35 percent of those women said they thought a yeast infection had caused their symptoms.11 If you tend to get such infections while taking antibiotics, ask your doctor about a prescription for fluconazole (Diflucan), an oral antifungal pill that can reduce the risk of yeast infections.

The benefit of probiotics has been largely unknown; however, a recent meta-analysis of available high-quality trials indicate short-term prevention of recurrence when used with antibiotics for BV or antifungals for yeast infections.12
