CHAPTER SEVEN

It was a happy evening; my wife had enjoyed her shopping as her son was with her; she could pick up any item without a second thought of its utility! If she were with me, before taking every item, she used to look at my face to see whether I agreed to take it or not, and I looked elsewhere as if I did not care what she put in the trolley! Of course, such were the only occasions for the husbands to prove that they loved their wives and they had full confidence in them!

Of course, as the head of the house, I used to show a grave face in such matters as I must be a bit ‘economic’, traditionally husbands were supposed to be like that, but for my bachelor son, it was a golden opportunity to please his mother, for he did not know what would be his condition after his marriage!

Of course, the most important thing in human life are relationships; perhaps, what we call love is merely an abstract idea but relationships are real; and the success of life depends on how strong our relationships are and how many relationships we can maintain successfully without losing their sanctity. As Swami Vivekananda said, “Relationships are more important than life, but it is important for those relationships to have life in them.”

I told my wife to prepare some fruit-drinks, perhaps to compensate her absence for a few hours but my son immediately went to the kitchen, opened the fridge and prepared some lime juice for all three of us. As we sipped the drinks, the doorbell rang and my son opened the door!

My friend Mr. Sanders was standing by the door and I was surprised how he came to know of my arrival from Ethiopia! He was my classmate in high school and after graduation, he joined the B.Ed. course and got the job of a teacher, while I went for my higher studies, first a masters degree and then a doctorate degree, and roamed here and there to find a job!

I greeted Sanders and we went together to my study and talked a lot about things that happened in the locality during my absence. Though he answered all my friendly questions, from the expression on his face, I noticed that there was some problem troubling his mind! It might be some sort of financial problem, I thought! Could anyone manage their family in Kerala with just the salary, though the amount was not bad? Soon I remembered that his wife was working in a nationalized bank from where the employees would get loans at a very low interest rate!

Sanders was silent for a few minutes, and then I noticed blood rushing into his face; a sort of wild look appeared in his eyes! He said in a calculative manner, “Well! George, I am going to kill that bastard who spoiled my daughter’s life!” He covered his face with both his hands and began to cry silently.
