Given the consistency of this deep-structure and the debate about authorship, the Mayer—Murnau cooperation requires some further comment.33 It was certainly widely discussed at the time. Willy Haas, for instance, could not imagine two people more different in appearance or manner — Mayer short, round and voluble, Murnau tall, reserved and formal:

Carl Mayer, unusually effervescent, strongly moved and deeply sunk into every phase of a conversation, as if his body, like a small tree exposed to a violent storm, was being tossed helplessly hither and thither. Murnau, on the other hand, was just as unusually sober, every inch the Anglo-Saxon gentleman, extra-dry, with a very abstract grasp of the different aspects of a dialogical situation, and for the rest, exuding refined politeness and exquisite breeding.34
