Chapter 14
After saying good night to Kiana, Maya took a shower. Then she dropped onto her bed, her emotions high as she recalled her evening with Brody. Sheâd started having second thoughts about what his actions meant the moment they left his house. And some of her thoughts featured Kim.
Kiana hadnât missed a thing, and she pounced as soon as Deacon had retired to his cot in the office. âNow will you admit Brodyâs into you?â
âNo. You saw how Kim took every chance to be close to him. I simply beat her to the punch before the fireworks started, and when I jumped at the first boom, he probably just took the opportunity to fend her off.â
âYou donât really think heâs the kind of man who would use one woman to deny another one, do you?â
âHe might have thought . . . Oh, I donât know.â
But that would mean Brody was a great actor. The way heâd pulled her to his side. The look in his eyes, as if he wanted to kiss her . . . Thatâs why sheâd asked him to call her. She had to know if heâd changed his mind about a relationship only as friends. But she wasnât ready to tell even Kiana that.
âLetâs not get ahead of ourselves, Key.â
Now she rolled onto her side and forced herself to think about Nicholas Hamel and Leonard Hamel. She pulled out her phone, opened her Facebook app, and gasped when she saw Leonard Hamel had agreed to accept a friend request. Her heart picked up speed as she sent it.
When she returned from the kitchen with a glass of water, she was surprised to see heâd already responded. Now able to scroll through his full profile, she saw he listed himself as widowed and a senior partner in his law firm in Washington, DC. As she studied his salt-and-pepper hair, long attractive face, warm smile, and milk-chocolate eyes, she looked for any similarity to her own countenance. But everyone always said she looked like her mother.
Then she examined his photos, which were mostly of him and a brown-and-tan German shepherd. Mr. Hamel was fit and seemed to enjoy spending time outdoors with the beautiful canine.
As she stared at his profile photo again, her chest tightened. This man could be her father.
âWell, thereâs only one way to find out,â she whispered, and then she typed another message to him.
