CHAPTER X
The forest began to change colour, and the ochre-coloured beech leaves fell to the wet and muddy ground. The most seasoned birds flew through the grey, menacing sky on their way to the warmer lands of the South, migrating as they had done every year since the beginning of time. These were the first signs that the end of summer had arrived. It had been several weeks since I returned to Vestfold. My father had surprisingly recovered his health and was already taking short walks around the farm. According to Fenja, once the winter had passed he would be much the same as ever although he would not be able to sail on the Black Dragon or lead an expedition, as he was still far too weak to carry out such an exploit. As for Hassmyra, we could barely exchange furtive looks of mutual understanding in the distance when we walked past each other at the market or when walking through the streets of the village because she was always escorted by several of Ottarâs men, who prevented me from getting anywhere near her. I would shout out that I loved her and that I would never forget her, that our love was more powerful than the hatred her father felt for me. She smiled at me bitterly and her eyes revealed immense desolation. She still loved me, there was no doubt about that, but my intention to kidnap her and run away from the village became ever more complicated. Ottar protected the farm day and night with his toughest warriors and once I even saw some of Jokull's friends accompanying them. He had resumed the good relationship with Jokull that characterized them. Oxhead had forgiven him and, naturally, had not cancelled the wedding that, if the Aesir did not remedy it, would take place next winter. But I wouldn't give up, I still had a year to prevent such a terrible event from happening. For Odin and for all the gods of Asgard and Vanaheim, Hassmyra would not waste the rest of her life doomed to the hell which marriage to my brother would mean.
Luckily, I only crossed paths with Jokull a couple of times when we limited ourselves to exchanging challenging looks and clenching our sword hilts tightly in anticipation of a sudden attack. We both knew that sooner or later we would face each other in a singular confrontation, a fratricidal duel that would end only when one of us was dead. But the time had not yet arrived and we both knew it. Even though my brother was in a great hurry to run me through with his sword, as his looks showed, he had to wait until the Norns had woven our fateful and definitive encounter on their wretched loom.
