NOTES

1. The constructs of bonding and bridging social capital can be usefully viewed as restatements of Toennies’s Gemeinschaft/Gesellschaft distinction, and also of Durkheim’s organic/mechanical solidarity.

2. Nancy Fraser’s work more properly belongs to the body of literature on the public sphere, which theorizes the opportunities citizens in any society have to engage each other in particular kinds of dialogue that may be important for maintaining a democracy. Readers who are interested in this set of theories should begin by reading Jurgen Habermas’s work in this area and the many responses to it, such as Fraser’s. Fraser is introduced here because her concept of the subaltern counterpublic offers such a useful way of thinking about how different types of social capital might offer different kinds of opportunities and constraints.
