Chapter Nine: Boone's Place

The shack was motionless upon my arrival at the Boone's. I parked around the side to keep the Jeep out of sight and headed inside. A latch for the trap door had been constructed using a hood latch off an old car, the cable had been run to a candleholder on the wall, allowing access from above and easily locking with a pull from below. I pulled on it and went on down to the basement, latching the door behind me.

"Hello" I hollered out in case anyone was around. There was no reply.

The drive had thoroughly kicked my ass. My head continued to throb and my nose had again started to bleed. My only ambition was to rest, so I cleaned up in the bathroom and sacked out on the couch where I had many times before.

I awoke to the crack of a rifle. I sat up on the couch, surveying my surroundings, vaguely recalling my journey not yet registering that a shot had been fired.

CRACK…Another shot echoed across the valley outside. I jumped up, knocking over a jar that had been placed on the end table beside me. Eric or Kevin had apparently returned while I slept and left me a quart of moonshine. The gruesome image of Kevin pried its way into my thoughts just as another shot rang out. 'My gun', I thought, 'where is my gun?' I recalled the bag that I had left in the Jeep so I crept up the stairs and cautiously proceeded outside to the Jeep.

"I was startin to think you's never gonna wake the hell up" I instantly recognized the distinctively raspy voice.

"Damn good to see ya Eric" I replied as I squinted to fight off the bright sun as it reflected off the even brighter snow.

"My shootin wake ya? Dropped a pair of doe down by the crick, figured best stock up while we can".

As we walked down the mountainside to retrieve the deer, he told me briefly of their discovery. He claimed that he and Kevin had been tracking an elk a while back and came across something. He would not give the specifics, only stated that I'd have to see it for myself and we'd take a look once Kevin and JJ returned.

I had wondered why they needed JJ. JJ was their cousin and he too had been a good friend for a number of years. He was a wiry little guy with short hair and a distinct widow's peak, and was without a doubt, the craziest son of a bitch I had ever met. He had fled Colorado and been on the run for a year or two after getting into a scrap with a guy over a cocaine deal gone bad. JJ headed to Alabama, the other guy to the morgue. Although I looked forward to seeing the crazy fool again, I was troubled to think of what would make him risk returning.

We found the deer not far from the creek where he had shot them.
