Chapter Fourteen

Jasper had a secret. He had skipped church for several weeks, but it was for a worthy cause. He had employed the services of a physical therapist, Kim Moore, and had compensated her well.

As he wheeled toward his physical therapy room where Kim waited, Jasper remembered their first session.

Kim had scanned the area. “Looks like you have a good setup here.” She walked over to examine the prosthetic legs.

“The prosthetic legs were fitted a year ago and were meant to be worn then,” Kim said. “They may not fit as well as they did then.” She gestured for Jasper to come closer.

“They will fit,” Jasper said, wheeling up to her.

He watched as she attached one of the legs onto his stump. He held out a hand to attach the other prosthetic leg. Jasper repeated Kim’s movements with precision.

“Good,” Kim said. “Not many get that on the first try.”

“Let’s just say I’m really motivated,” Jasper smiled. A vision of Charmaine’s face sprang before him.

He shook his head. He was not doing this for her. He was doing it for himself. Coach Lewis had asked him to assist with the Little League team he was starting up in Port Charlotte, and Jasper was eager to help.

But he needed two legs.

He navigated his chair to the parallel bars. He leaned forward and clutched the bars. With Kim’s help, Jasper braced himself against the bars to stand. With a light push, for the first time in a year, he stood.

Jasper looked around the room at every angle and breathed in the sweet air of independence. “Thank you, Lord,” he whispered. Then he tried to step forward. Sweat beads formed across his forehead from his effort.

Kim’s hands supported both of his hips while he wobbled. He shifted his frame and slid his right leg forward almost as if he were skating.

Jasper had taken his first slide-step and he was still erect. Hallelujah! He puffed his chest and smiled. Now for another.

“Easy now,” Kim said, holding onto his arm. “Rest a moment. You don’t want to overdo it.”

Oh, but he did. He needed to make up for all the time he had refused to walk. If it took him all day and night, Jasper was determined he was going to walk on his new feet.

“I’m doing it,” he insisted. “I’m going to walk today.”

Kim shook her head at his stubbornness. “Okay, we’ll keep going.”

Jasper took a tentative step with his left leg. At that moment, the six-foot-long bar seemed as long as a mile. Jasper rested. Light panic rose within him. His chest constricted and he strove to breathe.

“Take small, steady breaths,” Kim said.

Jasper closed his eyes and focused on her gentle, even tone. He prayed. Lord, help me do this. I can do all things through You.

Jasper pierced her with a gaze. “I’m ready.”

Kim nodded. “Okay, tell your brain to lift your feet.”

Fear riddled him. He could tumble again. Then Jasper remembered the toddler on YouTube.

“You want to lift your leg,” Kim advised. “It’s not going to fall off.
