CHAPTER NINE
ONBOARD EXPERIENCES
The onboard UFO experience is perhaps the most controversial of all types of UFO encounters. With sightings, the ETs remain at a safe distance. While landings and face-to-face encounters involve direct contact, the environment is still on Earth. With onboard UFO experiences, however, the witness is in a totally alien environment. In many of these cases, the witnesses are dealing with an event that traumatizes them on several levels, often causing repercussions for years afterwards. Many people find themselves utterly transformed by the experience.
The below cases represent only a small sample of the true number of onboard UFO experiences in Nevada.
CONTACTEE TRUMAN BETHURUM
On July 27, 1952, highway maintenance worker Truman Bethurum was on the night shift. During his break, he decided to drive around the deserted street of Mormon Mesa. At some point, he pulled over to take a short nap. When he woke, he was shocked to see that his truck was now surrounded by ten short olive-skinned men. Several feet away, a huge metallic disk, 300 feet in diameter, rested on the ground.
Bethurum exited his car and the men invited him aboard the ship to meet the captain. According to Bethurum, the captain was a beautiful woman named Aura Rhanes. She looked entirely human and was dressed in a black velvet bodice, a red pleated skirt, and wore a red and black beret. The inside of the craft was brightly lit. Rhanes had a short discussion with Betherum. First, he asked if they were from a foreign country. Rhanes replied that they travel interplanetary and have only recently landed on earth. They spoke about the ship and that they had others like them. Rhanes then ended the meeting, saying they would meet again.
Over the next three months, Bethurum claims to have had a total of eleven contacts. During each occasion, they would discuss various issues. The ETs told him that the planets in our solar system had breathable atmospheres and that several were inhabited. Another example is that Rhanes told Bethurum that they came from a planet called Clarion, which was unable to be seen by people on Earth because it was âon the other side of the moon.â
Because of the fantastic and unique nature of Bethurumâs story, most researchers place little credibility on his account. Others, however, have stood by him, and point out that Bethurum was able to provide some documentation to verify his story.
One of the documentation was a piece of paper and a message given to Bethurum by Aura Rhanes. In 1954, researcher Leonard Stringfield met Bethurum at a party. He approached Bethurum and asked if he had ever thought of having the paper chemically analyzed. Writes Stringfield, âBethurum evaded the question.â
Not to be put off, Stringfield asked again. Bethurum, however, declined to answer. Instead, one of his nearby supporters jumped in to answer the question. Says Stringfield, âHe explained that an analysis of the paper would prove nothing, since paper manufacturers on Clarion used pulp from trees just like those on
