The real thing

John Pemberton was an Atlanta pharmacist, but he was also a man with a vision: He wanted to make the perfect drink. So he came up with a syrup that combined the coca leaf and the kola nut. Mixing it in a big kettle, he lugged it down to a local drugstore, where he sold it for five cents a glass — and averaged nine sales a day.

Pemberton died in 1888, and the formula for “Coca-Cola” (a name created by Pemberton’s bookkeeper from the two main ingredients) was sold to a clever marketing man named Asa B. Candler. Candler realized that advertising was the key to making the product a national brand, and devoted an unheard-of $50,000 a year to marketing the drink. Other executives who followed him perfected distribution and bottling techniques, and today billions of bottles and cans of “Coke” are sold in more than 150 countries.

PS: Among other things, Pemberton claimed his drink could cure headaches and dyspepsia. He made no rash claims about diet dyspepsia.
