Well, I do believe I can begin to imagine the dimensions of “negro hair in america,” but what I can’t imagine is the reaction to wearing hair in a style we now know as dreadlocks in the early 1960s, an era when just wearing an Afro was stepping way, way outside. Lawson, presuming he’s accurate in his description, wore locks before Bob Marley, at a time when they were absolutely without precedent in this country. I have no doubt his hair were antennae, attracting attention—and trouble—in equal measure.

And yet, even Lawson begins to fit the dread profile when he reveals why he grew his hair:

for someone who was an individual,” he wrote, “it was an off the cuff, casual, living question: what would happen to a negro, if i stopped combing and cutting my hair? no negro had ever dared to even ask such a question, for fear that the lord would strike you down with a curling iron, and fling your mortal soul into the burning pit [of] concolene (pre jerry [sic] curl) for eternity. decades later, i am still unraveling the answer everyday.
