Chapter Seven

“Reverend Ben isn’t in?” Julianne asked the next morning as she walked into the office shared between the day-care center and The Old First Church.

“Not yet, but soon,” Emma Fulton answered. She smiled at Julianne. “Coffee?”

“No, thanks. How are you this morning, Emma? That sweater you have on is beautiful,” Julianne commented while approaching the secretary’s desk. “Is it new?”

“Yes, it is,” Emma replied, her face beaming with a wide grin. She ran her hand down one sleeve of the soft ivory garment. “It was a present from my Sam. He knows the air-conditioning in here has been too cold to suit me these past few days, so he bought this new cardigan for me. It was such a lovely surprise.”

“It’s very pretty,” Julianne responded, “and it is freezing in here. I thought Betty said Warren Sinclair was going to take a look at the air-conditioning this week.”

“He’ll be here later today. And Reverend Ben will be in any minute. Do you need to see him?”

“Yes, I was wondering if you would check his schedule to see if he’d have a few minutes to talk to me later? Today, preferably? It wouldn’t take long. I just need his opinion on something,” she said and hoped the secretary wouldn’t inquire as to what the subject of the discussion would be. With Emma, that was always a possibility.

Emma smiled and reached for the pastor’s appointment book. “Certainly, Julianne. Just a moment.” Picking up a pencil, she tapped it absentmindedly on the desk. “How about right when the center closes today? Six sound okay?”

“Well, yes, but I know how Reverend Ben is about wanting you here in the office during his counseling sessions. I don’t want you to have to work late.”

“Don’t worry,” Emma assured her with a shake of her head. “I’m staying tonight, anyway, to finish up the monthly newsletter, so I’ll be right here at my desk. Sam is working overtime at the hardware tonight so it will be a good time to take care of this work I’m behind on. Is six all right then?”

Julianne nodded. “Yes. I’ll be here as soon as the last child leaves. Thank you.” She tucked some stray hair behind her ear and turned to leave the office.

“Julianne…nothing serious, I hope?” Emma asked, bringing a reluctant smile to Julianne’s face. She’d nearly made it out of the office without Emma Fulton’s curiosity making an appearance. Almost, but not quite.

“No, nothing serious,” Julianne responded before disappearing through the doorway. Just the possibility of changing my entire life by marrying Luke O’Hara, she considered as she made her way back to her classroom. Wouldn’t Emma be amazed to know there was a marriage proposal Julianne was contemplating? In fact, that piece of news would bring such delight to the matchmaking secretary, Julianne felt a little guilty about her pleasure in keeping the secret.
