Chapter 37

FBI Field Office

Jacksonville, Florida

Connell waited until Scarfano left his office. As soon as she glided past his window and out of sight, he flipped open his cell phone and pressed number three.

The phone rang several times before it was answered. “What is it, Agent Connell?”

“Mr. President, I’m sorry to bother you, but I have some disturbing news.”

Connell heard a loud sigh and an expletive. “How disturbing?”

“It would appear that before Blake Meyer’s house was blown up, he had some behind-the-scenes investigations going on simultaneously while he ran point on this Operation Wepwawet fiasco. Actually, some of them started long before this whole Wepwawet thing started.”

“And? Isn’t that what you people do?”

“Yes, sir. It is. However, it’s the person Agent Meyer was searching for in one of those investigations who may pique your interest.” Connell waited, wanting to create a dramatic moment. “Major General Pyotr Botinkin. Sergei Botinkin’s father.”

“Interesting,” the president said. Connell heard the sounds emanating from the other end of the line become muffled as if a hand covered the mouthpiece. Then, a few seconds later, the sounds became clear again. “Has he found the major general?” The president’s voice sounded more distant now as if he were on a speakerphone.

“His contact has. Yes, sir.”

“And what did Agent Meyer want with the major general?”

“Meyer was trying to find out about the contagion. And apparently, when Meyer was interrogating Sergei, he gave his father up and told Meyer that if anyone knew about it, his father would.”

A long silence ensued. More muffled noises and voices in the background.

“So, what’s Agent Meyer’s next move?”

“I’m not sure. Agent Scarfano did talk to the MI-6 operative at the request of Agent Meyer. According to this MI-6 agent, the major general will give us information about the contagion, but in return, he wants his son delivered to the Russian Embassy.”

More muffled voices and noises. Connell could hear someone swear. More noises rubbed against the speaker of the phone. “Let me get back to you, Agent Connell. I’ll have an answer for you shortly.”

“Very well, sir.”
